What is KZN cricket doing wrong?

2010-02-13 00:00

IT is of major concern when provincial teams based in Cinderella cricket towns Oudtshoorn and Potchefstroom outplay sides from cities with as rich and strong a heritage in the game as Pietermaritzburg and Durban, but that is what has unfolded over the past two days.

With visitors KZN Inland having lost all 20 wickets for 248 runs in the Provincial Three-Day Challenge on the Recreation Ground in Oudtshoorn, it came as no surprise when South Western Districts knocked off the 96 to win at five per over late yesterday afternoon for a five-wicket win inside two days.

And at stumps yesterday at Senwes Park in Potchefstroom, North West led KZN Coastal by 374 runs with six wickets in hand as the teams go into the final day. Potch and Oudtshoorn beating Durban and PMB at cricket? Comprehensively outplaying them in every one of six sessions over two days? If it weren’t so tragic it would be laughable.

And, please, no more excuses. Inland won the toss and chose to bat. North West have scored almost three times as many runs for the loss of a similar number of wickets, albeit the NW top-order have now batted twice and Coastal will get their second go today. And don’t say the bright lights of Oudtshoorn and Potch are attracting the best youngsters either. Inland mustn’t whinge about franchise players in opposing sides. Look at the “mighty” names in the SWD XI.

The big question is: what are the Mickey Mouse provinces and towns doing that KZN isn’t? Or what is KZN doing so badly wrong?

If this isn’t absolutely, totally and finally the very last wake-up call to KZN senior cricket then what is?

The 40-over matches take place tomorrow.
