∙ 7.30 am. Howick Birding Group hosts a morning or day’s outing to Ron Gold’s "Hidden Valley" near Muden. Meet at Umgeni Valley at 7.30 am to arrange transport, or at the venue at 8.30 am. Take the Greytown Road from Mooi River; after 18kms turn left at Joubertsvlei Store onto a gravel road marked ‘Middelrus’. After 15kms cross the Moor River on a single lane iron bridge. Carry on another 4 kms and turn right onto the D371. First turn to the right – approx. 2kms – turn right onto the D 750. Drive down the hill and re-cross the Mooi River via a concrete causeway. We will be met there and tea, coffee etc will be provided on arrival. Leader is Eve Hughes: 033 330 2723.

∙ 9 am-noon. Macs Wednesday Art Club – an interactive group. Work in medium and level of choice. All welcome. R25 per session. Inquiries: 033 386 6500.

∙ 1.10 pm-1.50 pm. The South African Society of Music Teachers presents a free lunch-hour concert at the Tatham Art Gallery, featuring Philippa Greenwood and students, who will present a programme of piano music. Inquiries: 033 394 1818.

∙ 2 pm. Maritzburg Croquet Club invites people of all ages for a game of croquet, every Wednesday and Saturday. The lawns are in Alexandra Park opposite the cricket Oval. Mallets can be borrowed from the club, flat-soled shoes are recommended. Inquiries: Tim at 033 502 0101 or Viv at 033 396 3661.

∙ 5.15 pm. The Cathedral Chamber Choir rehearses each Wednesday evening in the Anglican Cathedral. All singers welcome.

∙ 5.30 pm-7 pm. Intermediate and advanced T'ai Chi classes at the Lexden Scout Hall, Hosking Road. Contact Nico at 082 825 7412.

∙ 6 pm. Ladies Night with Damon Beard of East Coast Radio from 8pm. Tickets: R50 per person. Bookings essential.
