When most wouldn’t …

2012-04-07 00:00

THIS past weekend’s cold front has definitely initiated the onset of the inevitable winter. Temperatures plummeted and the rain fell and fell amidst the aggressive winter-like winds. Conditions were horrible to say the least.

Now if you were at Sterkfontein Dam fishing a double BETT event like we were, you would have welcomed these less than glamorous conditions. Why would you have welcomed such pitiful conditions? Because the weather at Sterkfontein was 10 times worse! We had torrential rain, hail, lightning, thunder and gale force winds that sent the wind-chill to below zero.

If that were not enough, add Arctic Sea-like swells that made us feel as if we were starring in an episode of Deadliest Catch! As they say though, the show must go on, and we were not going to stop for anything.

As I mentioned, there were two events on the cards to make up for the month of April which has no scheduled event due to the Inanda Bass Classic. That meant a separate event on Saturday as well as a separate event on Sunday, which brought fish and spot management into play.

Saturday’s event saw decent bags being weighed by the teams that did not pack up and leave, despite the horrific conditions. When I say decent, I mean between 2,5 and three kilograms with Team El Grande Lures weighing the heaviest bag at 3,3 kg. Andrew and I ended up with a respectable sixth position for our efforts and endurance.

On Sunday, the wet weather had moved on but the wind and freezing temperatures accounted for the early departure of a further group of teams, leaving only the most dedicated and mentally ill teams to battle it out. The fishing was obviously a bit slower, but persistence paid off with many teams still bagging their limits albeit small. Andrew and I once again located some reasonable fish for the situation and weighed in the exact same bag weight as we did on the first day. This, however, was enough to secure a second-place finish for Sunday’s event, which has now put us on top of the season’s leader board after four events.

It feels great to be on top again, but with the scores so close, it is going to take extreme effort and some good old fashioned luck to keep the top class teams behind us at bay.

The fishing still seems to be pretty good at Albert’s, I was there a few days last week and had no problem locating the fish. I am sure that the cooler temperatures will start the pre-winter feed which we have all grown to love. Inanda dam will also start featuring with the build up to the much anticipated Inanda Bass Classic at the end of the month and in May, you will have to live without me for a few weeks as I head to the U.S. to catch up on some old times and do battle with every available fish in Louisiana. Maybe I will send a column from there, but that won’t really be fair!

So get out on the lake and catch some Bass, and remember to release your catch alive to prolong the sustainability of our resource. E-mail me with reports, pictures and questions at zorthewitt@hotmail.com.

Catch em’ up.
