Where pupils think global, act local

AN international environmental group, The Earth Organisation, launched its first chapter at Eastwood Primary School in Pietermaritzburg last week.

The non-profit organisation, which teaches the community about caring for the environment, has chapters around the world that are run by volunteers who are committed to reversing the dwindling life on Earth and creating a healthier planet.

The Pietermaritzburg chapter was launched with the co-operation of pupils in grades one to three at Eastwood and will be run by Carl Uys and Sam Madlala.

Efforts to involve the community in environmental conservation got off to an exciting start for the children as they cleaned up their school and were shown which rubbish degrades naturally.

The issues addressed were those of pollution and litter.

Madlala said the launch marks a new chapter in nature conservation in the city. “We will be targeting different schools in the city and also in the surrounding townships.”

Madlala said they will not only target school pupils in their drive to conserve the environment.

“This initiative is aimed at the young and the adults to ensure that everybody who lives on this planet plays their role in conserving it.”
