Who is the mystery passenger feared drowned on bridge?

POLICE are appealing for help in the case of the young man who was allegedly swept off the Woodhouse Bridge low-level bridge on Thursday night.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Joey Jeevan said yesterday that no one had opened a missing person’s case in the matter and that there had been no queries from concerned family members.

Police don’t know who it is they are looking for, although they have been searching the Msunduzi River.

Jeevan said that on Thursday night, police at the scene were frantically looking for the man who had been swept away, so none of them had taken the names or contact details of the young men who survived the incident.

She appealed for anyone who knows anything about the matter to call the investigating officer, Captain Raj Mathapersad, at 084 417 4825.

She also appealed to Ziyanda Mthembu (22), who was quoted in The Witness after he had swum to safety, to call Mathapersad.

The incident occurred when the car, believed to be a Mazda 323, was swept off the Woodhouse Road low-level bridge after a heavy downpour in which the river rose dramatically. Three men escaped the raging waters, but reported that one of the occupants was not accounted for.

Mthembu said he had to swim for his life. “I’ve never swum before. But I did tonight.”

He said they were driving from Scottsville to Imbali and that the driver had not realised that the bridge was flooded. Mthembu said he was the last person out of the car. — Witness Reporter.
