2008-08-07 00:00

What is your connection with The Witness and to Pietermaritzburg?

I have lived in Pietermaritzburg since 1966, having relocated here after military

Where were you born, where did you grow up? What’s your educational background?

I was born and raised in Pretoria and I matriculated there.

How do you spend your days?

I am a quality assurance practitioner at a local company.

Do you write letters to other newspapers? Why do you choose The Witness?

I have written the occasional letter to other publications but mainly write to The Witness because it’s our local paper.

How do you receive your news about South African current affairs and why do you follow it?

Through The Witness and I access overseas Internet news sites. I like to keep abreast of current affairs.

Do you have any other passions or interests?

I enjoy motoring and motor sport, reading and computers.

What do you think is the value of letter writing? What inspires you to write letters?

There is probably little value in writing such letters because I doubt if the people whose actions or words inspire me to write them, read them. My main inspiration comes from politicians or officials with their feet in their mouth.

What do you think are the biggest challenges facing South Africa today?

Crime, corruption, violence and self-serving, greedy leaders.

What is your age, marital status and children?

I am 61 years young and married with two sons.

What do you believe has been your best letter?

The one I wrote many years ago about the late Alderman Dales using council money to move the tank from the United Services Club to the Moth Cottages on the grounds that it was being urinated on. I wrote and asked him where the Pietermaritzburg City Hall was going to be moved to prevent people from urinating on it.

Do you get any feedback as a result of your letters?

I have had phone calls and people sometimes mention that they read and liked one of my letters.
