Wholesale changes to SA U18 team

2014-08-19 00:00

THE SA Schools’ team have been almost completely shuffled for their clash against Wales U18 at Outeniqua Park in George today.

The match is their second in the 2014 U18 International Series, that sees the SA Schools’ team take on France, England,

Italy and Wales.

South Africa ran out 28-13 winners over France at the weekend, but the team’s selectors have made wholesale changes to the side, with only three players remaining from the team that beat France.

They are right wing Andell Loubser, inside centre JT Jackson and lock Eduard Zandberg.

Ngonidzashe Chidoma from Northwood is the only KZN player to feature in today’s match-day 23, while SA Schools captain Jaco Coetzee from Glenwood has been ruled out with an ankle injury.

That means that fellow Glenwood pupil Kenneth van Niekerk has cracked the nod to join the SA Schools squad.

SA Schools coach Hein Kriek said the decision to shuffle the team was a premiditated one.

“With three matches to play just a few days apart from each other, we have to plan very carefully, especially with a very tough last match against England in mind,” he said.

The coach has targeted his team’s set piece as their own area of concern.

“We did well in the lineouts, but we have worked hard on our set pieces and also our defence.

“Our players applied their skill on attack and we managed to make good use of our opportunities. However, we worked very hard on our defensive pattern and mindset and that’s the area we want to target for improvement in our second match in George,” added the SA Schools coach.

The SA Schools team have an impressive unbeaten run of four years in the Series.

The match is telecast on SuperSport 8 from 3.45 pm.
