Why did couple die? Northdale neighbours ask themselves

2015-02-12 00:00

AFTER the deaths of a couple in Northdale, neighbours and friends were left speculating yesterday about the reasons for the tragedy.

Friends and family gathered yesterday to mourn the deaths of Subendran (38) and his wife Desiree Naicker (35) as their funerals got under way in the afternoon at the home their bodies were found in.

Among the mourners, a few had their own version of the events that may have unfolded in the lead-up to the deaths.

One resident alleged that Subendran recently won over R1 million in the lottery but had found himself in financial turmoil.

Others speculated that he may have had tensions within his family due to these financial issues, which was corroborated by more than one person.

Another resident, who requested he not be named, said Subendran was a “good person who was helpful to neighbours”.

“He worked closely with my son helping him here and there. We were shocked when we woke up to news of their death,” the resident said.

Desiree was described as a person who was hardly ever outside the home and remained secluded indoors.

When The Witness tried to approach the family for comment, one family member swore at the journalists and indicated that they refused to comment.

Both bodies deceased were found on Tuesday after almost two months inside the premises in Surat Place, Northdale. It is alleged that Subendran shot his wife and then turned the gun on himself.

Neither of the couple was working and they had no children.

Neighbours who reported the couple missing to the police said their home had been closed since December 15 and they initially thought the couple were on holiday.

According to the SAPS, a charge of murder and an inquest docket were opened for investigation.
