Wife shoots her man, then herself

2011-10-12 00:00

Siphiwe Mabizela (42), a manager in the office of the mayor of Umzinyathi Local Municipality in Dundee, was at the Mayoral Cup games at a local sports ground when he was killed.

Police said Mbatha-Mabizela arrived at the grounds and phoned her husband, who had left his seat to meet her.

She shot him with a 9 mm pistol and then turned the gun on herself.

They both died on the scene.

A person who was present at the games said the wife shot Mabizela next to the toilets before running a short way and then shooting herself.

“Jealousy can make people do crazy things. The man was a great guy and it is rumours that led to this. Mabizela had to be with people all the time due to his position in the municipality and Ntombi always wanted to be with him.

“Even when he had to go away for work purposes she would expect him to bring her along,” said the source.

He disputed reports that Mabizela was sitting with another woman at the sports ground on the day of the incident.

It was reported by a Durban paper that the couple had no children of their own. They were raising the wife’s three children and an adopted child.

Attempts to get a comment from the families were unsuccessful.
