Wild card teams join qualifiers for Community Cup

THE annual national club rugby competition, the Community Cup, starts in 99 days and teams can now begin to mentally prepare for the round-robin stages of the tournament.

The pool draw was confirmed yesterday after Western Province club Durbanville-Belville became the 20th and last team to qualify for the 2015 showpiece.

Regional qualifying came to an end when Durbell beat Upington Dorp 82-26 on Saturday. Theirs was the final match of the two-month regional qualifying for five wild card teams to join the automatic qualifiers in next year’s Community Cup.

The other four wild card teams joining Durbell are Vaseline Wanderers, Jonsson College Rovers, Port Elizabeth Police and Wesbank.

Having qualified, Durban side College Rovers, who were winners of the old club champions competition in 2010 and 2012, as well as 2013 Community Cup runners-up, slot into Pool B and have tough opponents in Raiders and Pretoria Police to contend with.

BB Truck Noordelikes and Bloemfontein Crusaders are the other two sides in the pool.

Durban Collegians, who automatically qualified after winning this year’s Moor Cup (KZN Premier Division), are in Pool D alongside Wesbank, last year’s Community Cup champions Despatch, Welkom Rovers and Shumba Ferros.

The qualifying rounds ensured that the Boland, EP, Lions, KZN and WP rugby unions all have two clubs in the tournament.

The Community Cup starts on February 21 with five weeks of pool action up until March 21. The top eight teams will then play in the Easter play-offs.

The Gold Cup will be handed to the winners after the final, which is set to be played on Easter Monday.

Club rugby gets another boost as all 12 of the play-off matches will be televised live on Supersport.
