Willie Mtolo: 10th place, but he's unhappy with his sponsors

2008-06-15 00:00

KZN favourite Willie Motolo, who came in 10th, lambasted his sponsors Mr Price for not dressing him, organising seconding or putting him on a monthly retainer before the race.

Motolo, a previous New York marathon winner who did well in Comarades last year and in other races like the Two Oceans Marathon, said he felt cheated.

“It was not like they don’t know me, I have proven myself.”

He said he had to organise his own seconding to supply him with drinks even though he was aware that other athletes also sponsored by Mr Price were given this comfort.

“Some were put up in hotels and I wasn’t. I am not sure why that is. I should be treated like all the other runners that are sponsored,” he said.

Despite his disappointment in Mr Price, Motolo said he enjoyed the race.

“The first half was very tough, but I think the support from spectators keeps us running. You get more power when someone is there screaming your name and encouraging you to go on.”
