Willies Mchunu in bid to stop vigilante-style deaths at ‘murder city’

2014-03-10 00:00

COMMUNITY Safety and Liaison MEC Willies Mchunu has called on the kwaMashu community to work with police to fight crime in the area after two suspected rapists were killed vigilante-style there.

Mchunu said the Department of Community Safety and Liaison met with the hostel block chairperson with a view to understanding internal dynamics that cause so much crime at the hostel.

The two bodies were found at the Rotary Sport Field on Friday.

The department said the bodies were allegedly those of suspects in a rape case who were out on bail. “Preliminary information reveals that community members spotted the suspects and allegedly beat them to death.”

Mchunu said no one had the authority to take the law into his hands.

“It is worrisome that the kwaMashu hostel has turned into a murder city. This must now come to an end. No one has a right to take the law into his hands because that is criminality,” said MEC Mchunu.
