Willowton Oil donates R32 000 to NGO farm

A PIETERMARITZBURG NGO vision of sustaining an income-generating and self-sufficient farm has come a step closer to realisation following the launch of its seedling growing division.

The KwaZulu-Natal Blind and Deaf Society has received a donation from Willowton Oil of more than R32 000. It comes with the manufacturer’s pledge to continue supporting the NGO’s successful hydroponics farm in Northdale.

The society’s regional manager, Anand Naicker, told The Witness that the new seedling tunnel meant that the farm would no longer have to buy seedlings, which was a major cost driver for the project.

The hydroponics farm is one of the society’s main sources of income. It covers about 2 400 square metres and has 10 tunnels, runs as a commercial operation and supplies fresh produce like tomatoes and cucumbers to local supermarkets, including three Spar retailers.

It employs five regular workers and seven disabled trainees.

The farm produces up to 4 000kg of tomatoes per month.

Farouk Moosa, a director of Willowton Oil, told The Witness that his compnay was excited to be part of a positive project.

He promised additional support, and called on local residents and other businesses to become involved in the project.

David Gengan, the chairperson, said the farm still faced challenges relating to lower prices being paid by retailers.

He called on retailers to commit to paying good prices as part of their social responsibility campaigns.
