Win R10?000: 10th annual ‘True Stories’ competition launched

2009-08-06 00:00

TEN years ago, The Witness launched a writing competition devoted to telling the stories of our province, and writers and readers responded with enthusiasm.

Today, after publishing hundreds of stories, we are very proud to launch the 10th annual ‘True Stories of KwaZulu-Natal’ contest.

There are two categories again — Open and Snapshot — and all stories must be true and have a strong link with our province.

Stories for the Open category should be no longer than 1 500 words. The winning entry will receive the grand prize of R10 000 and the runner-up will receive R3 000. To mark our 10th year, finalists will also each receive a unique pot made by midlands potter Trayci Tompkins.

In our Snapshot category, we will award R3 000 for the best true story written in fewer than 800 words. To get an idea of what we’re looking for, previous winning entries can be read on our website at

The closing date for entries is September 4, 2009.

How to enter

) If you send your entry as an e-mail attachment, please include your contact details in the same document as the story.

) Be sure of your entry before you send it — “improved” versions won’t be accepted.

) Editing is at the discretion of The Witness. All entries become the property of the newspaper. Manuscripts will not be returned.

Semi-finalists who make it through the first round of judging will be announced in the second week of September and finalists’ names will be announced on September 18. The two winners will be announced on November 27 after all the finalists’ stories have been published.
