Wind storm hits Elandskop hard

2009-11-03 00:00

STRONG winds destroyed several homes and left a number of people destitute in the Elandskop area on Sunday afternoon. It is thought that at least 18 houses were blown away.

The Khokhwane, Maswazini and Zondi Store areas were the worst affected. The wind ripped off roofs of mud houses leaving only wobbly walls. Some houses were completely destroyed.

Yesterday afternoon, Msunduzi Municipality disaster management teams were in the area to assess the damage and offer help.

Local councillor Thinasonke Ntombela said his biggest worry was that there were more people affected than they were aware of.

“Only 18 homes have been identified. However, should the weather conditions continue like this, more houses will collapse.”

Among those affected is the Msomi family of Vulindlela. The roof of their home was blown away and the walls are unstable. The eight members of the family had to take refuge in their neighbour’s house as they had nowhere else to sleep.

Ntombela said it would not be safe for the family to put the roof back on the structure as it is too insubstantial. “We will advise the family to apply for aid from the municipality, who in turn will contact the department of housing to build them a home.”

The owner of the house, Nicolina Msomi, said the winds left her and her family destitute.

Lucky Zimu, a disaster management officer with the Msunduzi Municipality, said they would provide the necessary aid for those who were affected. “We will organise tents … blankets and food parcels.”
