Winless Impi face log leaders tonight

2012-03-12 00:00

THE University of KZN Impi have a challenge on their hands when they take on log leaders Wits University in a Varsity Shield encounter at Wits Rugby Stadium in Johannesburg tonight.

Winless after five outings, UKZN face a Wits team that have earned 20 points from six matches and will be going all-out to increase or at least maintain their slender one-point advantage over Bloemfontein’s Central University of Technology (CUT).

With just one game left for Wits and CUT after today’s matches, neither side can afford to slip up. On paper CUT have the tougher match as UWC are still very much in the title race, having earned 16 log points and enjoying a game in hand over their rivals.

However, UKZN edged out Wits in the try-scoring stakes in their 18-10 loss to the log-leaders in the first round at Peter Booysen Sports Park on the Pietermaritzburg campus, only to be undone by the goalkicking prowess of the Johannesburg team’s flyhalf.

So it is fair to say that tonight’s clash at Wits Rugby Stadium (kickoff at 7 pm)is by no means a foregone conclusion. And with two home matches to come on Monday, March 19, against Fort Hare and against Western Cape on March 26 to wrap up the competition, there is still much for the UKZN lads to play for.

Today’s fixtures: Wits vs UKZN; CUT vs Western Cape.

Varsity Cup log in brief (played six unless stated): 1 Wits 20 points; 2 CUT 19 pts; 3 Western Cape (5) 16 pts; 4 Fort Hare 11 pts; 5 (5) UKZN 0 pts.

Remaining UKZN matches:

March 19 vs Fort Hare (PMB); March 26 vs Western Cape (PMB).

UKZN results:

UKZN 10 CUT 30; Fort Hare 36 UKZN 21; Western Cape 61 UKZN 10; UKZN 10 Wits 18; CUT 42 UKZN 4.
