Winner: IPL fan gets R15 000 school bursary

2009-05-04 00:00

IF you were to ask nine-year-old Cody Smith who won the second IPL match between the Kings XI Punjab and Mumbai Indians in Durban last week, he wouldn’t know.

In fact, he doesn’t remember much about the game. He will tell you, however, that he came out the biggest winner after cutting school to see his favourite sport stars.

Cody, a grade 3 pupil at Merchiston Preparatory, won a R15 000 bursary towards his education after being selected from the crowd with four other pupils.

This was courtesy of the IPL’s Heat (Help Education and Teach) initiative, a R9 million project that will see funds donated to underprivileged schools as well as to the young enthusiasts who attend the matches.

During strategy breaks at each match, five pupils are randomly selected from the crowd with the help of match television producers. Their faces are flashed on the stadium screens and later the winners are called on to the stage.

The R15 000 for each beneficiary is paid directly into each child’s school fees account.

Cody’s father, Shane, said the money is most welcome.

He said he got permission for his son to get off school early for an afternoon session since he felt the trip would be educational, and an opportunity to bond with his son.

Cody, who plays cricket at school, hopes to play as well as his hero, Jacques Kallis, one day.
