2014-11-10 00:00

THREE regional winners of The Entrepreneur competition — out of 79 entrants — were announced at the Pietermaritzburg Chamber of Business’ (PCB) annual gala dinner on Friday night.

Below are some details of the winners:

• Winner of The Entrepreneur 2014 was Philangezwi Ngcobo, trading as Wooden Pyramid.

Ngcobo started making wooden trays in his home in Edendale in 2010.

He branched out into ironing boards.

By 2013, he had secured 10 supermarket outlets and a cash and carry company as his main customers.

Production volumes of his business have more than doubled.

The PCB described Phila Ngcobo as “a true entrepreneur, able to identify market opportunities and to act once he has gathered favourable market intelligence”.

• First runner-up of The Entrepreneur 2014 was Kaamani Jangali, trading as Izimbali Florist.

Jangali has traded from her home until recently.

Last year, she moved Izimbali Florist into a shopping centre in the city where she shared premises.

A few months ago, she moved into her own premises in Parklane Shopping Centre.

Sales in her business increased by more than half per month.

The PCB said of Jangali: “[She] is a get up and go person who is determined to make things happen for herself. She is quietly confident and driven.”

• Second runner-up of The Entrepreneur 2014 was Taryn Govender, trading as TarynG Training.

Govender has been operating her business since December 2011.

She started by training ETDP Seta Skills Programme facilitators. She broadened her offering to include career development coaching, HR consulting, recruitment and selection, as well as corporate workplace programmes.

The PCB said Govender had impressed adjudicators “with her creativity, confidence and professionalism”.
