Winners:Shoprite Checkers Women of the Year awards

THE 2012 title winners of the Shoprite Checkers Women of the Year Awards were announced in Johannesburg on Saturday.

They were presented at an event held in celebration of women and their role in the future of South Africa, at Emperors Palace in Gauteng. There were no KwaZulu-Natal winners this year.

Shéri Brynard from Bloemfontein received the Youth Mover Award.

The Socio-Economic Business Developer Award went to Nyeleti Mushwana, who is from Limpopo. Margi Biggs, of Cape Town, received the Good Neighbours against Crime Award.

The Health Caregivers Award went to Tina Botha, who is also from Cape Town.

Accomplished South African chess player and teacher Marisa van der Merwe, of Pretoria, received the award in the Educators Category.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu was honoured with the 2012 Shoprite Checkers Lifetime Achievement Award.

He will donate the money he received to the Philani Child Health and Nutrition Project, Tygerberg Children’s Hospital Trust, Jabulani Rural Health Foundation, the Community Arts Therapy Programme and the Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation.

Each of the winners received R30 000, while the Shoprite group will also give R100 000 to the work of each of the winners.
