Winning the key moments proves the clincher in IPT hockey defence

2014-08-21 00:00

THE South Africa Women’s Interprovincial Hockey Tournament (IPT) witnessed high drama when defending champions Southern Gauteng were nearly upset by North West, but ran out 3-2 victors in the dying seconds.

The KZN Raiders were worked hard by Border before emerging 5-1 winners; Southern Gauteng Witsies edged Eastern Province 3-2 and Western Province beat Northern Blues.

Yet South African-capped Blues goalie Phume Mbande was superb to keep the match scoreless until Kim Hubach put the Pretoria side 1-0 up with five minutes left. A minute later Jacinta Jubb scored a brilliant second goal.

It was hard on last year’s finalists but the chances were not converted. The Northerns played like women possessed in keeping out the Cape Town girls.

Star-studded Southerns scored through South African players Lisa Deetlefs (53rd minute), Lilian du Plessis (66th and Shelley Russell (70th and last minute), while Stephanie Baxter (19th) and Amoré de Wet (56th) forced the champions on to the back foot.

“We were too static, but North West defended well and their senior players stepped up,” said Southerns coach Garreth Ewing.

Match-winner Shelley Russell said while they had not underestimated the opposition, they had not followed through on the game plan.

“It’s a reminder that every game is one you have got to fight for.”

NW coach Elun Hack was “super-proud” for his girls, but acknowledged experience at top level was important and the Southerns played key moments in the match “very well”.

NW led for over 60% of the game, forcing Southerns to continually play catch-up. NW opened the scoring in the 19th minute when the outstanding midfielder Stephanie Baxter flashed a superb strike past Investec South Africa women’s hockey team goalkeeper Sanani Mangisa.

It took Southerns 34 minutes to restore parity when Lisa Deetlefs rifled in a penalty corner. Three minutes later (56th) NW captain Amoré de Wet put her team back in front with a sweetly timed reverse-stick shot from the edge of the strike zone.
