Winter season starts next week

THERE have been a few school hockey matches and the Nite League games are being played in Durban, but officially the start of the winter season is this weekend. There are three matches in the midlands and each will give an indication of comparative strengths ahead of a busy second quarter and the hockey festivals during the Easter holidays.

Michaelhouse and Glenwood face up to one another on the Aitken’s Astro at Michaelhouse. Both teams have had a few matches in the Durban Nite League and last Saturday Glenwood beat Westville. The two sides should produce a competitive, fast game.

Hilton will host Westville and the home side will be confident of a win. They have only been involved in practice games with College and Michaelhouse, but these will have helped organise the team. As Westville has also been involved in the Nite League and played a full match last Saturday, they might well be better prepared.

Papes at Maritzburg College is the pitch where College play Northwood. The latter played last week and lost by a single goal against Kearsney. They have also played games in the Nite League, whereas College play their first official game, but with a number of players returning from last year, will again be difficult to beat. The other major game is at Kearsney where they host Clifton.

Both these teams have also been playing in the Nite League, while Kearsney had the match against Northwood last Saturday. Clifton will likely struggle in this match.
