A 16-YEAR-OLD youth is the latest among nine suspects so far arrested and charged in connection with the alleged vigilante-style murder of Pietermaritzburg couple, Tholakele Shezi (54) and her husband, Themba Wilson Shezi (60) who were beaten with sticks and stones and set alight after being accused of practising witchcraft.

The murders happened in Snathing near Edendale on November 30.

The Witness was told at the time of the incident that the couple were accused by the community of having abducted a seven-year-old boy and other people for the purposes of witchcraft.

The community was allegedly informed by a local sangoma that Shezi had abducted the missing boy, Mthokozisi Mpanza, who was later found dead with some of his body parts missing.

Tholakele Shezi was allegedly a trainee traditional healer.

The 16-year-old youth appeared briefly in court yesterday before magistrate Divesh Mootheram, who adjourned the case to January 6 for an opposed bail application.

The youth will join eight other co-accused — Siyabonga Shoba (26), alleged sangoma, Ellias Ngcobo (66), Nolwazi Mayeza (23), Mxolisi Kubeka (28), Andile Sibi (32), Mondli Dumakude (37), Mbongeni Mtolo (22) and Mzwandile Mbatha (25) in the dock on the next occasion.

All the accused are expected to apply for bail.
