With a day to go it’s a sorry tale for KZN Inland

2011-10-15 00:00

KZN Inland were in deep trouble after the second day of the Provincial Three-Day Challenge match against double champions Western Province at the Maritzburg Oval yesterday.

Resuming on their overnight 138 for four in reply to Inland’s first innings 131, WP set about consolidating their good start on day one, and partnerships of 125 for the fifth wicket, 90 for the sixth and 77 for the ninth ensured they compiled a mammoth 446 all out for a massive first innings lead of 315 runs.

The day’s star performer was first-class debutant Weshaam Keraan. Coming to crease on an overnight 46, Keraan went about his business in methodical fashion to compile a superb unbeaten 189 in just under seven hours and off 246 balls, which included 26 fours and a six.

On day one Keraan was ably supported by Qaasim Adams and yesterday saw captain Ryan Canning, Shaheen Khan and number 10 Michael Rippon take the baton against an Inland attack that asked few questions and was not helped by a poor display in the field.

Inland were 53 for seven when bad light stopped play with 15 overs left; left-arm spinner Siyabulela Simetu picking up 4 for 19. With a day to go, it’s a sorry tale for Inland cricket.
