With a little help from my ‘Porsche’

2010-01-22 00:00

WHILE everyone else has to make do with a regular partner, Thomas Ngidi has a “Porsche” pushing him up the hills of the Dusi.

Yesterday’s third-place duo almost didn’t make it to the start, as Eric “Porsche” Zondi woke up on Tuesday with pain in his right shoulder.

“To be honest, I was very disappointed,” Ngidi explained yesterday.

“The race was just days away, and I thought that he was not going to make it.

“But, he told me that we are partners, and that we can do our best and see where we can go,” a beaming Ngidi added.

“You know, he is like my Porsche engine, because he just keeps driving me up the hills and he is the same on the water,” the 24-year-old added.

The Lembethe Canoe Club paddlers had a day to cherish, as they ran strongly and then paddled just as well to secure third spot.

“Obviously the race will be a lot tougher for us on day two, but we must just try to keep pushing and try to hold on to third position,” Ngidi concluded.

The duo form part of Martin Dreyer’s “Change a Life” team, and the seven-time Dusi winner was on hand to see 11 of his paddlers finish amongst the top 24 boats.

“I think some of the guys probably pushed themselves a little too hard today,” Dreyer said.

“You must remember, this year there is some very good prize money on offer, and I think some of the guys may have worried about that too much, instead of staying in control … a lot of them cramped,” he said.

With three “Change a Life” boats in the top 10, Dreyer has high hopes that his charges can finish strongly over the weekend.
