‘Witness’: Open Gardens burst into life this weekend

2012-10-04 00:00

THE Witness Open Gardens season gets well under way this weekend with over 14 gardens opening their gates to the public.

This weekend is your last chance to view the magnificent Benvie garden in Karkloof in all its spring glory. There is also a new addition to the open gardens, Endebeni in the Lidgetton valley.

These large gardens allow you to take your family and wander through sweeping lawns and magnificent trees, surrounded by golden azalea mollis and rhododendrons in full bloom and enjoy a picnic at these beautiful locations.

You can also picnic at the heritage forest of Priscilla Francis at Milestone Forest in Balgowan.

Closer to the city, roses are in full bloom and you can smell their perfume as you walk down the pavement to old English-styled gardens such as that of Dawn Pellew, Mike and Gill Wilson and the ever-popular Rosehurst in Boom Street.

The university gardens are open, with special species for you to enjoy. There are beautiful walks along immaculate paths in the garden of Richard and Judy Anderson, which always features beautiful music and wonderful lunches, so be sure to book.

Norwood, the garden of Tim and Sabine Featherby, offers welcome shade on a hot day. Beautifully landscaped, the garden is a tranquil haven with splashes of blue and white with a wonderful rose cutting garden and vegetable garden.

Eric and Wiida Badenhorst’s garden is another beauty, with precise clipped hedges, roses and symmetry through the garden, while the Pelzer garden on Old Howick Road is a newcomer to the circuit, offering a unique opportunity to view some rare and treasured plants.

Another newcomer is the Collins garden, managed by the Sinclairs, where it is well worth spending a few hours.

Further inland the beautiful garden of the Sivrights, Glengarry, is on show.

All the gardens are open from 9 am to 5 pm.

If you missed the catalogue in The Witness, call in at your nearest garden centre and collect one, or log on to The Witness Open Gardens Facebook page for a full listing.
