‘Witness’ contractor has a lucky escape

2014-05-07 00:00

A WITNESS contractor had a lucky escape yesterday when he found himself chased down by angry community members protesting over water and electricity in the Umvoti area near KwaMaphumulo in northern KwaZulu-Natal.

Mphathi Thusi, who was on his way to KwaMaphumulo to deliver newspapers, said he found himself trapped between angry community members and large trees barricading the road.

When he took a short-cut to get out, he found himself chased down by the angry residents throwing stones at him.

“It was around 5 am and it was still dark. I was in another store in the area, and before I was to continue towards KwaMaphumulo, the owner of the store told me to wait there for a little [while] because he could hear the voices of people protesting.”

He said the day before, another section of the community had protested over the lack of water and electricity and the mayor had come to address them; those affected by the same problems felt left out and they too decided to protest.

“I waited at the store as the protesters were coming down the road past me. I thought I could continue to the other deliveries once they had passed, but found they had barricaded the road and I could not continue,” said Thusi. “I found a small road to use, but the community saw me there and started chasing me. They did not want any cars there so when they saw me they took that as a sign of disrespect.”

Witness contractors were unable to make their deliveries in the areas affected by the protest yesterday.
