'Witness' donates to Sobantu creche

2010-10-05 00:00

AS part of its corporate social responsibility programme, The Witness donated a fridge and a stove to the God’s Community Crèche in Sobantu on Friday.

The crèche was founded in 2004 and caters for an estimated 112 children. It has been operating without these two items since its inception which made it difficult to properly monitor the food needs of the children.

The crèche principal, Bongiwe Mcambi said they made an official request to The Witness to donate the items. “Ever since the school was founded, it has been without these two essential items and we have managed to survive and work through with the mercy of God.”

She said they were eternally grateful for the sponsorship. “We hope that other organisations would follow suit and donate to the crèche because there are still a lot of items such as mattresses and toys that are needed for the school.”

Patrick Zuma a Senior Human Resource Officer at The Witness said the donation was part of company’s corporate social responsibility programme.

“There are two reasons we got involved. Firstly, being a crèche it is an education-related project so the educational needs of the children are being taken care of, and secondly The Witness operates close to Sobantu, so it is important therefore that we give back to the community we operate in.”

He said it was not the first time The Witness has donated to the crèche. Last year; it donated toys, blankets and other goodies.

“In Sobantu, The Witness also funds an Indigenous Tree Project which is managed by Wildlands Conservation Trust. We also have other numerous CSI projects within the Pietermaritzburg area,” said Zuma.
