‘Witness’ reporters are finalists in top awards

2014-04-24 00:00

WITNESS reporters have made the cut as finalists in three categories of the prestigious Standard Bank Sikuvile journalism awards.

The finalists were announced yesterday and were drawn from 683 entries across 14 categories.

The Witness chief reporter Rowan Philp and investigative reporter Jonathan Erasmus were named finalists in the hotly contested hard news category for their reporting on the Tongaat Mall collapse last year.

Philp, Erasmus and Mhlabunzima Memela were also selected as finalists in the investigative reporting category for their work on the business empire of Durban tycoon Jay Singh whose family-linked companies were associated with the Tongaat Mall and other controversial developments.

Philp is also a finalist in the feature writing category for a report he produced for the Mail & Guardian on former South African celebrity Jani Allan before he joined The Witness.

Earlier this month Philp, Erasmus and Memela were finalists in the most prestigious investigative reporting awards in South Africa, the Taco Kuiper Awards, for the Tongaat Mall body of work.

Witness editor Andrew Trench said, “We are proud of our reporting team being acknowledged as among South Africa’s best. This achievement is a testament to incredible commitment, professionalism and hard work from The Witness editorial team, which results in us being able to hit far above our weight.”

The awards will be held later in May.
