‘Witness’ reporters clean up at Vodacom awards

2014-09-19 00:00

THE Witness cleaned up in three categories at last night’s Vodacom regional awards in Durban.

Chief reporter Rowan Philp won the Print News category for his coverage of the Mandela funeral and the Print Feature category for his “How crime like cable theft cripples the economy” story.

Philp, Jonathan Erasmus and former Witness reporter Mhlabunzima Memela won the Finance and Economics category for their coverage of the collapse of the Tongaat Mall.

This is the first time in the 20-year history of the awards that one reporter has won in three categories.

Earlier this year the trio were announced joint winners in the investigative reporting category in the annual Standard Bank Sikuvile journalism awards for their Tongaat mall stories. They shared the award with the Sunday Times.

They were also winners in the Legends, Media24’s News Excellence Awards, for the same stories.
