‘Witness’ trophy for 12 As

BEING the eldest in the class was one of the factors that made Nomathemba Zondi-Ndlovu determined to be top of her class. The other was a friendly sibling rivalry she shared with her brother.

The enthusiastic student from Varsity College (33) graduated with 12 distinctions in journalism last week and was awarded The Witness trophy for her efforts.

She achieved distinctions in news writing one and two, English, computyping, media studies one and two, practice of journalism, sub-editing one, two and three, work-integrated learning, opinion and specialist writing.

“I am so happy and proud that I made it. Now I need to get a job so I can put into practice what I have learnt. Both my parents are happy for me,” she said.

Zondi-Ndlovu, the daughter of Inkosi Nsikayezwe Zondi, told The Witness that she dedicated the trophy to her parents.

She said her role model is media personality Khanyi Dlomo Mkhize because of her passion. “I want to be amongst the best females in the media industry who are there to make a difference.”

Admitting to some serious sibling rivalry, the eldest child of Thatheni and Inkosi Zondi said she felt the pressure to excel as her younger brother had done very well in his studies.

“I was under pressure as my younger brother Thobelani graduated with flying colours in his civil engineering B.Tech at Cape Technikon, so for me it was more of a competition. But I made it,” she said.

She said she did cartography and worked in the family business before she registered at Varsity College. “I did enjoy working in the family business but I wanted to be in the media industry as I liked working in this industry and want to focus on news writing,” she said.

• Her half brother, Prince Thamsanqa Zondi, a police sergeant, was killed in the line of duty during a bank heist at Richmond in January.
