Woman (22) killed after fight

2009-09-28 00:00

A SUSPECTED lovers’ quarrel ended tragically for 22-year-old Selena Mokoena, who died yesterday after being shot in the head, allegedly by her boyfriend in Smero.

A second woman, Evelyn van Wyk (23), who accompanied Mokoena on the visit to Smero, was taken to Edendale Hospital after allegedly also coming under fire while trying to flee.

According to police spokeswoman Inspector Joey Jeevan, Mokoena was shot twice in the head. Both victims are from the Harrismith area.

Initial investigations suggest the incident happened at about 11 am, after Mokoena indicated that it was time for her to leave. Mokoena’s 36-year-old boyfriend apparently asked her to step outside to talk to him and an argument ensued.

The couple returned to the house and Van Wyk, who was watching TV, apparently heard gunshots and was shot while she tried to flee to a nearby building. She is in a serious but stable condition.

Mokoena’s boyfriend was arrested at the scene. A 9 mm Norinco pistol — licensed to the suspect — was handed over. The suspect will appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s court shortly.
