Woman (74) raped, stabbed, suspect arrested

AN elderly woman (74) was raped, stabbed and robbed in her granny flat in Bisley on Saturday morning.

In a matter of hours, police arrested a suspect in the Willowfountain area in Plessislaer.

The woman is in a stable condition at St Anne’s Hospital, where she is recovering from the incident.

The woman’s son-in-law told The Witness yesterday that the family had been shaken by the incident.

“My brother-in-law [her son] is coming in from Australia to see her. One daughter has come from Grahamstown and her sister has come down from Pretoria,” he said.

He said she was very traumatised following the attack.

“As far as I know, she’s stable, but still in the ICU.

“I’m going to be seeing her tonight during visiting hours,” said the son-in-law, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the victim.

He said he had mixed feelings following the arrest.

“On one side, I am happy and relieved [that someone has been arrested]. On the other side, I hope they have arrested the right person.”

He said he hoped justice would be served.

Police said in a statement yesterday that a 28-year-old suspect had been arrested in connection with the crime.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said it is alleged that the woman was on her way to her room after having a bath when she was attacked by an unknown man who had entered her granny flat through an unlocked gate.

“The suspect stabbed the victim on the head with a sharp object. He then dragged her on the floor to a room in the house where he raped her,” said Zwane.

He said the suspect stole R450 from her purse, her cellphone and a sewing machine.

A man was arrested in the afternoon of the same day and is expected to appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court “shortly”.
