Woman and guard fights off robbers

2011-10-07 00:00

A BUSINESS owner in Uvongo, Latischia van Heerden, defied two robbers and fought them off with the help of a car guard in Shelly Beach this week.

Van Heerden said she was on her way to the bank to deposit a “substantial amount” of money, but the bank had closed for an hour during lunchtime.

“I still had 30 minutes to wait before the bank reopened, so I thought I would do some shopping to kill time,” she said.

She put the money, which was in a sealed box, into her boot and proceeded to the store.

When Van Heerden returned and opened her car boot to place her groceries inside, a man suddenly grabbed her from behind.

“Then another man appeared and reached for the box.”

Adamant that she was not going to let the robbers get away with her hard-earned cash, Van Heerden got into a scuffle with the men.

She screamed loudly for help and a car guard rushed to assist.

“It all happened very quickly … The older man [of the robbers] kept screaming to his accomplice to get the knife,” said Van Heerden, who alerted the car guard that the man he was wrestling had a knife.

The guard pulled a knife from the man’s pants that appeared to be about 25 cm long.

By this time bystanders had joined the struggle. “There were people everywhere that came to help us,” she said.

The younger robber managed to escape.

“Someone called Port Shepstone police. They were there in no time,” said Van Heerden.

She said it was thanks to the car guard and the passers-by that she did not get hurt and that her money was not stolen.

“I’m not a short-tempered person, but the attitude of these criminals infuriates me. What gives them the right to just steal someone’s hard earned money?” said van Heerden.
