Woman battling for her life after being shot in the head and possibly raped

A YOUNG woman was shot in the head, possibly raped, and left in an open field in Ladysmith yesterday.

The unknown woman (20) was discovered in a field behind the industrial area at Ezakheni by a passer-by who alerted the authorities and emergency services. She was rushed to hospital in a critical condition.

Marinus Nabal of IPSS Medical Rescue described what he witnessed as a horror scene. “It was quite tragic to see … to see that someone can actually do something like that.”

He said the woman was found in a field often crossed by people on their way to work. The nearest homes are almost a kilometre away.

“She was severely hypothermic and in a critical condition. She was stabilised on scene,” he said.

Nabal said the woman may have been raped. “I cannot confirm this because when I got there she had already been covered up, but some of the people there said she was naked when they found her. Only a district surgeon can confirm that.”

He said considering the nature of her injuries and the condition in which they found her, he was not sure if she would survive. “She was rushed to hospital and is in ICU. The prognosis is not good … I hope there is someone out there who has reported her missing to say this is my child.”

Police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said police are investigating a case of attempted murder and no arrests have been made.
