Woman cop in dock over SMS assault

2011-07-20 00:00

A POLICEWOMAN, Aysha Williams (34), and her husband, Devan Williams (39), of Northdale appeared briefly in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court yesterday on charges including assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm arising from an incident in which they allegedly attacked members of a Northdale family.

The Witness was told the assaults were sparked by a suggestive SMS message sent by a teenager.

The case was postponed until July 27 by magistrate H. Fobian to enable the couple to appoint an attorney to represent them.

They were not asked to plead to any charges.

According to the charge sheet the couple are charged with assaulting 27-year-old Neil Bhagwandeen by “choking him and hitting him on the back of the head with a firearm”; of assaulting a 15-year-old youth by “punching him in the chest and kicking him on the stomach” and of malicious injury to property for breaking three window panes at the property of Shanti Mtshali on July 14.

The charge sheet alleges that the window panes were broken by being hit with a gun.

Damage was estimated at R200.

The couple face two further counts of crimen injuria for allegedly calling Karen Shanon a “b....ch” and calling the youth a “c....r”.

The couple were released on warning following their arrest.
