Woman cyclist: Scene of fatal accident wasn’t closed to traffic

2010-10-12 00:00

OLIVE Knight was described as a keen cyclist and a runner by her sister Hillary Coonde, who is distraught at the death of her sister.

Knight, of Durban, died on Sunday when she was struck by a car near the Midmar Dam gate while competing in the Time Freight Midmar Notts Road Race. The driver will be charged with culpable homicide and driving without a licence.

Coonde said: “My sister was a loving person and a caring single mother to Rebecca, her daughter. We are going to miss her so much.” Knight was an occupational health nurse.

“We have spoken to the organisers of the race and they explained to us what had happened. Some races do close the roads completely while others do not, like the one my sister was participating in. The road was not closed completely, but there were marshals who were guiding the traffic as well as traffic cops,” said Coonde.

Roger Everton of uMngeni Municipality Traffic Department said they are still investigating the incident.
