A PIETERMARITZBURG man severely assaulted his girlfriend, then fell asleep next to her and woke up yesterday morning only to find that he had killed her.

The man then ran to Plessislaer police station to hand himself over for the murder of Zanele Zaca (38).

The assault happened in the Shayamoya area of Plessislaer at about 7 pm on Sunday. The 36-year-old suspect discovered at 11 am yesterday that Zaca had died.

It is alleged that Zaca and the suspect got into a fight over a key to the house when they returned from a tavern.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said the man hit Zaca with a stick repeatedly.

In another incident, the body of Jabulani Bhengu (59) was discovered in his house in KwaMnyandu, Elandskop, on Saturday.

Police said they believe Bhengu was confronted in his house by robbers who fled with his cellphone after stabbing him. A 21-year-old man has been arrested.

Another body, whose identity is not yet known, was discovered in an open field Khokwane, Taylor’s Halt, at about 8 am on Sunday.

Zwane said the deceased is of medium build, dark in complexion and has short black hair. He was wearing a light-blue T-shirt and khaki pants. His shoes were missing. Anyone with information can contact Captain J.Z. Mncwabe at 082 459 6888, or CrimeStop at 086 001 0111.
