Woman dies after home catches fire

A WOMAN was killed in the early hours of yesterday morning when her rondavel in kwaDindi, Taylor’s Halt, caught alight.

Police believe that Nombuyiselo Bhengu (31), the deputy chairperson of the ANC Youth League in Ward 6, had left a two-plate stove on when she went to sleep on Saturday night.

She was discovered in the burnt out rondavel yesterday morning, councillor and Youth League chairperson in the ward, Falakhe Makhathini, told The Witness yesterday.

“She was a very responsible woman and was studying to be a nurse. She also supported her family,” said Makhathini.

He said she often looked after her grandmother, but she was alone in the house when the fire happened.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Joey Jeevan said an inquest docket had been opened.

In another fire-related incident in Taylor’s Halt, a 62-year-old man, believed to be epileptic, fell in a fire he had lit in his house and died in Edendale Hospital from his injuries, said Jeevan.
