Woman dumps newborn girl in doctor’s toilet

2011-09-12 00:00

POLICE are searching for a woman who dumped her newborn baby girl in the toilet of a doctor’s surgery yesterday.

A patient at the surgery in Retief Street said the cries of a baby could be heard coming from the toilet during the lunch hour, and the patients discovered that a woman who had been to the toilet earlier had left the newborn baby. The patient, who declined to give a name, said the woman had asked to use the toilet.

ER 24’s Leo Fourie said it was a miracle that the 2,5 kg baby survived. The amount of blood around the toilet indicated that this was probably where the baby was born. Paramedics opened the toilet door and were horrified to find the newborn inside the toilet bowl.

“The baby’s head and arms were in the water and the baby’s legs were sticking upwards and the child was squirming around,” said Fourie.

The little girl was rescued and taken to Northdale Hospital’s paediatric intensive care unit.

Police spokesperson Joey Jeevan said they are investigating a case of child abandonment and are searching for the mother. Anyone with information should call the Pietermaritzburg family violence, child protection and sexual offences unit at 033 387 9500.
