Woman escapes from car, runs to cops

THE police presence at an accident scene on the N2 near Esikhawini allowed a woman, allegedly kidnapped from an FET campus nearby, to escape her captor on Thursday.

According to a statement issued by police spokesperson Thulani Zwane, police officers had been at an accident scene on the freeway in which a traffic officer had been hit by a taxi.

“The officer sustained leg injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment. The taxi driver was arrested, and charged with attempted murder and reckless and negligent driving,” Zwane said.

He added that while they were arresting the man, a speeding vehicle approached the scene.

“A Land Cruiser came at high speed towards the scene and when it slowed down as it got close by, a woman jumped out and ran towards the members for assistance.”

The vehicle made a U-turn and sped away. The police were suspicious and gave chase, and managed to stop the Land Cruiser nearby.

“The woman who jumped out of the car told police that she was kidnapped by the driver from Esikhawini FET College and that he had threatened to kill her.

“The driver insisted that he had paid lobola for her and she had rejected him. He was arrested and charged with kidnapping and intimidation,” Zwane said.

The man was due to appear in the Esikhawini Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

The woman declined to speak to Weekend Witness when contacted.
