Woman firefighter lays charge after alleged assault by colleague

2012-07-02 00:00

A SENIOR woman fire-fighter at the Msunduzi fire department said colleagues had to rescue her after a senior officer roughed her up last week.

Jenny Lewis said she suffered injuries to her back and bruising to her arm and leg.

She told The Witness she arrived for her afternoon shift at Msunduzi fire station and she and a colleague had an argument.

Lewis said the officer then confronted her.

“He started arguing with me and threatened that he would beat me.”

Lewis said the officer punched her and pushed her against the wall, in full view of other firefighters.

“Two other officers, my superior and another colleague, had to pull him off me.

“I went to the police station to report the matter, only to find him there already, wanting to lay charges against me.”

Lewis said she still did not know why the man had beat her up.

“I am now fearful of going back to work, because this might happen again,” she said.

Lewis’s irate colleagues, who would not be named, said they wanted action taken against the man

Another said the incident “should not have happened” because there was “no bad blood” between Lewis and the man.

“This happened because Lewis was arguing with one of the firefighters managed by this supervisor,” the colleague said.

The police confirmed the incident, saying a 50-year-old man had been arrested in connection with the incident and appeared in court on Tuesday.
