Woman in court accused of cutting off lover’s penis

A PREGNANT woman, who allegedly cut off her boyfriend’s penis last month, briefly appeared in the Protea Magistrate’s Court in Soweto yesterday on a charge of attempted murder.

Evidence Nkuna (22) was arrested on October 6. She allegedly caught her boyfriend earlier that day with another woman.

Police spokesperson Constable Sibusiso Chauke said Nkuna had told both her boyfriend and the other woman to take off their clothes.

She then used a knife to cut off her boyfriend’s genitals.

Nkuna had initially been charged with assault with the intention to do serious bodily harm, but the charge was later changed to that of attempted murder.

She arrived at the court yesterday morning accompanied by an older woman.

She was wearing a beige coat that barely hid her visible pregnancy.

The Witness could not ascertain how long she has been pregnant and whether the father of her unborn child was the boyfriend whom she has mutilated.

Nkuna entered the dock in the absence of a legal representative.

The prosecutor, Advocate Cheryl Slack, told the court Nkuna has successfully applied for legal aid.

She asked for a postponement in order for the state to hand over the docket and other relevant documents relating to the court case to the Legal Aid Board.

The case has been postponed until next week. A decision about a trial date will then be made.

Nkuna has been granted bail of R2 500.

She refused to talk to The Witness outside the court and also instructed the older woman who accompanied her not to talk.
