Woman loses everything after fire engulfs her room

A WOMAN has been left destitute after her shack was gutted by fire in Pietermaritzburg yesterday afternoon. All her belongings were destroyed in the blaze.

Samkelisiwe Ndlovu, who works as a domestic worker in Northdale, was cooking dog food on a fire outside at her new employer’s home, when the fire swept into her back room at the house.

It was her third day at work.

Her burnt belongings include a bed, her clothes and cellphone.

The mother of two sat on the floor weeping, while firefighters tried to extinguish the fire. “I lost everything. I’m only left with what I’m wearing,” said the tearful Ndlovu, who is originally from Nkandla.

“I went into the main house and when I came back the smoke was inside my room and I couldn’t get in. I took a bucket and tried to drench it but it was too late.”

Fireman Anwar Kajee, who was at the scene, said they arrived in time to rescue the main buildings.

He believed the fire may have been sparked by a grass fire. “We suspect this call may have started from a grass fire which caught onto two wendy houses. We got here in time to save both structures,” Anwar said.

“We managed to extinguish the fire. Unfortunately the woman is very traumatised as she had all her valuables and belongings in the house. It’s hard to say what was inside because the fire demolished everything into ashes.”

Ndlovu’s employer said he couldn’t comment, saying he hadn’t arrived home and he did not know what was burnt.
