Woman shot in police station: mother to sue

2011-08-30 00:00

THE mother of the woman who was gunned down by her partner in front of the station commander at Mzamba police station in Bizana, Eastern Cape, said she plans to take legal action against Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa and Police Commissioner General Bheki Cele because of the carelessness of the police.

Nokwakha Maqane alleged that her daughter, Nobantu Maqane (21), was abused by her partner.

“We believe we are not safe as South Africans at all. How had my daughter been killed in front of the police, where were the police when my daughter was killed and how are we going to trust them?”

Maqane said she is seeking damages from both the minister and commissioner.

She said she was surprised to learn that South Africans are unprotected even when the police are present.

“Where can people get protection if somebody can be killed in front of the police and slowly walk away from the police station while police are present?”

She has asked the government to provide a safe place for communities who feel they are not being protected by the police.

The bail application of the accused, Gugu Manciya, continues in the Bizana Magistrate’s Court today.

He has been charged with murder, attempted murder and the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Mbizana Mayor, Zoleka Busuku and Alfred Nzo executive mayoral committee member Nomangesi Malunga Mlomo were among those who attended the bail hearings.
