Woman sold vacuum cleaner for R7?000, but still no delivery

2012-11-09 00:00

A PIETERMARITZBURG woman was duped out of R7 000 by two vacuum cleaner salesmen last week.

Leslie Alborough (67) received a call two weeks ago from a man who asked if she would like her carpet cleaned, and she agreed.

When the cleaners arrived, they turned out to be salesmen who attempted to sell her a Kirby vacuum cleaner for R18 000.

They finally negotiated a price of R7 000 and she handed them a cheque for that amount.

“I was very foolish for doing so,” Alborough admitted.

“It’s a very expensive mistake,” she told The Witness.

She said the night she handed the cheque to the “charming salesmen”, she could not sleep as she was fraught with worry.

“I called them immediately the following morning to tell them I didn’t want it anymore, and asked them to cancel the cheque. I asked them to tear it up and destroy it.

“A few minutes later I received an SMS telling me that the cheque had been deposited.”

Alborough was faxed a proof of delivery notice — which bore her signature — but denies she ever received the vacuum cleaner.

She agreed the signature on the document was hers, but she does not remember signing it.

She only recalled signing the invoice that was given to her before they left her Townbush home.

Her daughter, Clare Huston, said Alborough was not a forgetful person, and the entire incident had made her feel “very silly”.

“She is polite and can be gullible at times,” she said.

“Her being trusting does not make what they did to her okay.”

When The Witness called Raymond Moodley, of Kings of Kings Trading CC — the company that “sold” Alborough the vacuum cleaner — he said the machine had been delivered and he had the document to prove it in the form of the proof of delivery.

He said he would return Alborough’s money once he had received his vacuum cleaner back.

Alborough has reported the matter to the police.
