Woman stabbed in church grounds

2010-10-09 00:00

TWO young children watched helplessly as a man stabbed their mother to death in the grounds of the Cathedral of the Holy Nativity between Church and Langalibalele streets in Pietermaritzburg yesterday afternoon.

Nomcebo Happiness Mvelase (29) was with her two young children, a boy (six) and girl (10), according Vanessa Jackson of ER24.

She said an unknown person approached the woman and began stabbing her.

“The woman’s children fled the scene into one of the church’s yards and alerted church members.

“ER24 paramedics were called to the scene, but, sadly, the wounds were fatal and she was declared dead on the scene,” said Jackson.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joey Jeevan confirmed the incident.

“She sustained multiple stab wounds in her face and chest,” said Jeevan.

She said the motive is still unknown. It does not appear to be robbery.

“She was found carrying a total sum of R2 000 in cash. Her gold ring, gold chain and cellphone were still in her possession when police arrived,” said Jeevan.

She said police will continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack.

Jackson said some of the church members comforted the children until Mvelase’s family members arrived. “They were inconsolable,” she said.
