A woman survived a gunshot wound to the head after her boyfriend allegedly shot her at her home in Sobantu on Saturday.

Nokubunga Mwele (22) was confronted by her boyfriend, who told her that he was going to shoot her.

"Family members intervened and pushed him out of the house and locked the door," said police spokeswoman Inspector Joey Jeevan.

The boyfriend then allegedly kicked open the door and fired a shot at Mwele, before fleeing.

Mwele is believed to be in a stable condition in hospital.

"Mountain Rise detectives have since arrested a 29-year-old suspect," said Jeevan.

He will make a court appearance in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate's Court shortly. An unlicensed handgun was allegedly found in his possession.
