Woman twice fights off attacker

2010-09-06 00:00

A PETITE 25-year-old woman summoned the strength to fight off her attacker twice as he tried to throttle her on her family’s Mid-Illovo farm last week.

The woman’s father, Lindley Gonlag, told The Witness yesterday that his daughter Angela was attacked by a farm worker in her burglar-barred cottage, which is separate from the main farm house.

Angela is the farm manager on Stoke farm.

Gonlag said Angela was relaxing in her lounge with her two dogs at around 7 pm when someone threw a towel over her head from the back and started throttling her.

He said that although Angela is petite, she is strong, and she managed to throw her attacker to the ground. She then recognised him as a dairy hand and asked him what he was doing.

“The man then rushed at her again, but she asked for God’s help and somehow managed to throw him off once again. She ran to the kitchen where she pressed a panic button, grabbed a knife and hid behind the fridge.” The man subsequently escaped.

Gonlag said his son, who was in the main farmhouse, rushed to Angela’s aid when the alarm went off and called the police and the security company.

He was full of praise for the Mid-Illovo police who responded quickly and went to the attacker’s house where they waited for him and arrested him.

Gonlag said Angela’s dogs did not bark as they recognised the worker. It was later discovered that the suspect gained entry to the cottage via the fanlight window.

“She is still traumatised and we are at our wits’ end,” Gonlag said.

He expressed concern at the number of recent farm attacks.
