Woman’s ordeal of pain at Northdale

2009-12-08 00:00

A PIETERMARITZBURG woman spent five hours in severe pain walking the corridors of the Northdale Hospital emergency ward in the early hours of yesterday morning as the nurses had allegedly failed to attend to her.

Natasha Bank said she was driven in an ambulance to the hospital yesterday morning suffering from gallstones. She said she was left standing at the emergency ward from 4.30 am till 9.30 am when they finally attended to her.

“I arrived here at about 4.30 and none of the medical staff at the hospital bothered to offer me a place to sleep, so I spent over four hours standing because I could not sit as it was swollen and painful.”

She said the care at the hospital was at an all-time low.

“The doctor, who was supposed to be on duty till 8 am, disappeared for an hour and then came back 10 minutes before her shift ended and got into her car and drove off.”

Banks said she was eventually admitted overnight as she had to have X-rays done. She added that she was not the only patient who was ignored by the staff. She claimed a couple who arrived after her screamed for help to no avail until they “just disappeared”.

She said the treatment she received shocked her because she had previously used the hospital and was treated well.

“This is not the first time I have been to this hospital. The first time they treated me well, but this time around it was horrible. I don’t know what is going on in this place.”

Health Department spokesman Sibonelo Msomi confirmed that Banks was at the hospital and that she had been attended to.

He said they still needed to talk to her to find out axactly what had happened.
