Women escape in bullet-riddled car after hijack attempt

2010-01-05 00:00

A CATO Ridge woman, her sister and daughter narrowly escaped death after they were shot at by hijackers last Wednesday.

Rosa Diamond and the two others were on their way to a local garage to buy cigarettes at about 7 pm.

She says she had noticed the four young men in the vicinity of the garage but didn’t think they could be hijackers. The nightmare started on their way out of the garage area.

“Things happened so fast, but God was with us because I acted swiftly. I saw two of them coming towards our car and the other two followed.

“All were armed: two with handguns, a third one with what resembled an automatic rifle and the fourth one was armed with what looked like a donkey-pin,” said Diamond.

She said the attackers told them to open the doors and swore at them.

“I don’t know what I was thinking, but I just ducked, pretending to be reaching down for something, and when my head came up I just started the car and I bumped one of the men. They started shooting at us and a bullet narrowly missed my daughter …”

As the attackers attempted every trick in the book to confuse their targets, the car stalled.

Diamond says it was by God’s grace that they got through the attack.

“We didn’t know what they wanted exactly.

“When the car stalled I kept on looking at them, not wanting to give up hope, and for some reason the car just kicked in as I kept on trying the ignition.”

She said her vehicle is riddled with bullets.

She has reported the matter to the Cato Ridge police.

At the time of going to print, the police in the area could not be reached for comment.
